All You Need to Know About Radio Frequency Micro-needling Devices

Radio Frequency (RF)  Micro-needling  has become increasingly popular recently, the treatment heats the dermis and tighten the skin without damaging the surface. Our medical director, Dr Lam Bee Lan, shares more about RF micro-needling devices and what it can do for you.

What is RF micro-needling?

RF micro-needling is a minimally-invasive cosmetic/aesthetic procedure. It uses tiny needles and radio frequency waves to rejuvenate facial skin. The treatment is a form of controlled skin injury.

This is achieved through rapid penetration of the needles into the skin without causing damage to the surface of the skin, the epidermis. The micro needles then release RF energy below the skin surface, stimulating the growth of healthy new collagen to treat common skin issues like acne scars and wrinkles.

Newer micro-needling radio frequency devices such as Sylfirm X have been shown in clinical studies to be effective in treating challenging skin conditions such as Melasma. These micro-needling radio frequency devices generally cause minimal discomfort and little downtime.

Different types of RF micro-needling devices

Agnes

Agnes treatment is a radio frequency treatment designed to treat chronic acne at the root of the problem. Acne is an inflammatory disorder of the hair follicle arising from our sebaceous glands; Agnes destroys these glands without thermal injury of the epidermis to effectively reduce acne.

Using precisely administered radio frequency energy through special tiny partially insulated needles, Agnes destroys the sebaceous glands without causing any injuries to the skin epidermis. With the sebaceous glands destroyed, hair follicles do not get inflamed and infected any more so acne on the treatment area goes away for good. Pimples do not form again in the treated follicles and over time, the number of new lesions reduces.

In addition, the Agnes device can also be used for the following indications: saggy upper eyelid, eye bags and syringoma. The emitted radio frequency energy with controlled precision can selectively target and shrink subcutaneous fat between the skin and before the orbital septum. This results in tightening and firming of the skin around the eye as new collagen is stimulated into forming.

INTRAcel

The second RF micro-needling device is INTRAcel. INTRAcel delivers fractional radio frequency pulses via microneedling to target acne scars, pores and wrinkles. The tiny insulated needles penetrate the skin at a defined depth without damaging the top layer of the skin, to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. This helps to reduce acne scars, minimise pores and e wrinkles and tighten skin and for an overall rejuvenation.

It works by combining three treatments in one: radio frequency, microneedling and fractional treatment. The insulated micro needles create microscopic wounds when in contact with the skin. The needles are insulated except for 0.3mm of the tip where radio frequency is emitted only to the target area, without damaging the surface of the skin. There are 49 needles in one square centimeter. The body reacts by kick starting its healing process, remodeling collagen for a new, healthier and stronger skin in the treated areas and the surrounding skin.

INTRAcel can be used to treat the skin at various depths, delivering customized energy according to the patient’s skin concerns and different regions of the face. The device is used to eradicate acnes and acne scars, shrink pores, improve skin texture, tighten loose and saggy skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

Sylfirm X

The recent addition is Sylfirm X. Sylfirm X is the first US-FDA approved RF micro-needling procedure that utilizes dual wave (continuous wave and pulsed wave) for skin rejuvenation, scars, pigmented and vascular lesions such as melasma, diffuse redness and rosacea. Sylfirm X has its safety and efficacy proven through over 25 clinical studies.

What makes Sylfirm X different from RF micro-needling treatments of the past is that it selectively treats increased pigmentation and vascular lesions. It is the only RF micro-needling device that is approved to safely treat neovascularities, including conditions that are difficult to treat like rosacea and melasma. Sylfirm X has 8 different modes allowing it to be customized to different treatment sites and skin conditions.

The cause of facial blushing and melasma is pigment that is rooted in our blood vessels. Sylfirm X selectively and safely treats specific areas of the skin by destroying abnormal blood vessels. Therefore, it can destroy only abnormal blood vessels without harming the rest of the complexion.

Melasma pigments are especially difficult to treat because they form in the deeper levels of the skin. Sylfirm X can treat dermal melasma by coagulating over-proliferated vessels. It also strengthens the basement membrane which is weakened due to UV rays and aging. Sylfirm X can stop pigment migration from the epidermis to the dermis.

By solving the fundamental problem of over proliferated vessels, Sylfirm X minimizes the recurrence of these issues. This treatment not only stabilizes the epidermis but also reforms the structure of the vessels in the dermis. Thus, accelerating the regeneration of the skin tissue. Because of this, Sylfirm X is effective in fixing fine lines and wrinkles, brightening skin tones, tightening pores and rejuvenating skin.
